I don't want to mislead you into thinking I've been diligently painting with my oils in the studio..I haven't and frankly it's making me a little sad...I've had such a busy season with my watercolor shows and workshops, that it's cut into my time with my oils...but I'll be back...I do have two small oils entered into the Small works show at the Bryan Memorial Gallery in Jeffersonville...this being one of them.

My rooster series continues...with the beginning of spring and some colorful florals, I might branch out and sharpen the brushes to capture a few daffodils or tulips. The lilacs are coming along as well...we'll see...for now it's a sharp dressed "man"...so to speak...

Bright eyed and bushy tailed...except you can't see his bushy tail here. He is taking his chore of overlooking the farm seriously. I need some new brushes, because mine are getting a little rough around the edges. I guess that happens...I do have a tendency to "scrub" a bit...on the canvas and when I clean it in my solvent.

The oils have taken a backseat these last few weeks...can't explain why...I'm looking at all the tubes, brushes and panels on a daily basis, but somehow I'm not digging in...I'm painting up a storm with my watercolors, though..oh well, flip flopping between media is okay...the oils will have their day again soon! I'm finding myself in the studio more these last couple weeks, but unfortunately the oils have been quite sporadic...I just threw a dried paper palette sheet away and have some newly rinsed glass jars for my medium and turps...so there's no excuses..well..one can always find some excuses, but this is a new year and new dedication and new rooster images are always ready to be painted!

Dapper friend...I always find roosters to be so dressed up and proud of it...I guess with the harem of hens around them they need to uphold a certain level of finesse...ha ha! Constantly fluffing and primping to give themselves that polished look.

This fluffy fellow was cooped up when I took his picture. He did have some company, though so I don't feel that bad for him. I'm off to a meeting for the watercolor society today and then it's back into the studio and the drop-in figure session tonight. What that has to do with my oils...I don't know! I'm working on a mixed solo show this summer of my oils and watercolors with a food/farm theme. I'll let you know details as soon as I have them.

Happy New Year everyone! Another year, another chance to set goals, a clean slate (so to speak) and over two feet of snow here in Northern Vermont! Ouch...but it is the great white north, so in terms of skiing and enjoying outdoor activities (like the new snowshoes we got for Christmas) it is very important to get the white stuff...I'm going to try to expand my oil experiences this year, how I don't know yet, but if anything I'd like to paint with them more than last year. Just taking a walk through the summer grass, basking in the sunlight...it shows off my colorful feathers so well... These poor terrorized birds that I chase around the farm yard with my camera...they just want to be left alone. They do tend to walk in the opposite direction when they see me coming! I love this little pumpkin...had such a good time painting him. He has been chewed up by the squirrels in our yard since then, but he lives on in paint! The squirrels this year had a blast with the pumpkins around our house. One pumpkin had a hole in the front and at one point the squirrel had crawled all the way inside and had himself a feast! They should be well plumped for the holiday season..

Hayloft duo

A protective rooster and his hen...keeping an eye out from high above in the hayloft. When I was taking my pictures at the farm I kept hearing this rooster crow coming from somewhere, but couldn't figure out where the loud mouth (beak) could be...After a little scouring I spotted him up in the loft with the dark interior behind him and a few stray bits of hay highlighted by the sun.

As Thanksgiving approaches we decorate with pumpkins...actually we already have with Halloween just behind us...but they take on a new meaning. They are less spooky and come in canned form! Meant to be eaten, not carved up instead slathered with whipped cream in a cookie crust! And of course we can paint their portraits! Dig in!

More and more of these fellows are coming out of the woodwork..or barn so to speak. The oils blend and mix so nicely and the creaminess is like butter! I use Utrecht brand oils and have a variety of brushes, but find the synthetic hair brushes to be the easiest...you get a smooth and sharp edge if you want one. I'm even using some toothpicks to add the highlight to their eyes. The beak on this fellow is my favorite part.

All these small paintings have been so much fun to do. I keep sorting through all my pictures and coming up with more and more portraits of these roosters. I finally downloaded all 500 plus pictures on my camera to my computer! It's a little strange not to have any images on my memory card right now. It even says..."this card has no images". I guess having our Christmas dinner on there from last year was a hint to get busy with sorting them out!

The colors are a little washed out in the picture...the original is alot more vibrant..especially the blue water line in the background. I scanned these little oils on my scanner and I have also photographed them, I don't know which represents the pieces the best way. Everyone's monitor and computer settings are different as well..you can't win, but this way at least you can see the painting!

I took so many pictures of roosters and chickens this summer, that I have inspiration galore...the poor cluckers didn't stand a chance with me chasing them all around the farm yard...shooting them with my camera! No casualties though, now they're just captured forever on canvas.

In honor of Halloween I've painted a few pumpkin portraits. This is one of four. I'll post the other ones sometime soon. I've also been busy with roosters and will place a few of those on here as well. Just cleaning out my jars of odorless turpentine and removing the solids from the bottom and pouring off the clean turps from the top. Yuck! Then it's off to the hazardous waste dump to get rid of some of those jars!

Make it up

A fantasy pear...did this painting without an actual model in front of me. Makes you invent colors, shadows and shapes. This is 8"x6"...I find it freeing to sometimes paint with the imagination..we can become such a slave to our models, be it a still life, landscape, figure etc...so any and all spontaneity is lost, let go and just make it up..

This was actually a study painting I did for a Different Strokes challenge when I first broke out the oils. I ended up posting my watercolor version, but actually quite like this one. It is created using a limited palette and the putty that I used in my first oil painting techniques class. I think I might still have the picture kicking around, so I could play with this image some more. I do have two more versions of this and might post those soon....

This was also from the class I took with Tad Spurgeon (see previous post for a link to his website) and we had to work with a limited palette. Not my greatest effort, but I think I got the idea of the value lesson. I have yet to venture outside with my oils...so far I'm just a studio oil painter!

This rooster study was done during a class I took

last year at this time with Tad Spurgeon. Click on his

name to go to a section of his website where he talks

about color. His oil painting method is very interesting

and he is so into the chemical and technical aspects of the

medium. We worked with this "putty" that we used to cut

the pigments. It was a very unique and different way of

using the paint. If you have a chance go check it out.

Just off a full 5 day workshop week...one that I was taking

not teaching. It was incredible. I'll never look at the Vermont

landscape the same way again. It was an interesting class, because

we had a mix of mediums..some used oils, some watercolors and there

was even a lady who worked outside in collaged papers. A bit tricky

with the wind, but she did some really great stuff.

Now it's back to studio time.

is that willing tomato that posed so nicely for me. Subtle

color changes and that greenery really works for me.

I might delve in to the world of squashes and such, but

don't hold me to it...baby steps :) The produce is so

prolific at the farmers markets right now..an abundance

of choices for still lifes!

Another pear study..why do pears make it so easy..they

are great models, have such colorful flesh tones and sit so

nice and still for us :) Well I found a willing tomato who

wanted to give modelling a try, so I propped it up on the

still life stand and put the spot light on! Stay tuned for the

As a challenge for myself I wanted to paint a really small

image of a pear on the 6x6 canvas panel. So if you compare

this pear to the rest of it's environment it's only a little over

an inch big! I admire the artists who paint miniatures..it's

not easy to do..I think subconsciously we want to paint the

subjects as life-sized or bigger, but smaller is tough.

Back to the pear theme...I find that the subtle shading

and light bouncing off all the bumps and rounded shapes

are really a challenge and force me to focus extra hard

on what it is exactly that I'm seeing...it's so easy to want

to "invent" things that aren't really there.

It looks like this apple and orange are on a steep slide

down the table! It's amazing how rich the darks are on

those red apples and how red the shadow side is on the

orange...maybe just a little neutral.

fairly graphic combination of my initials..I do that with

The strong shadows from side lighting my still lifes

have got to be my favorite thing. It's amazing what

colors pop up in the shadows..after squinting at them

for a while there are all sorts of subtleties within them.

Oh, the little games we play...I like to challenge myself

by trying different color combinations and ofcourse

always trying to come up with an interesting composition.

That's probably the hardest thing, because if it's not right or

enticing enough to the eye, the viewer will get bored...and the

artist painting it probably as well!

My favorite part of painting with oils is the fact that

you can cover over something...with watercolors you

quickly get mud. A similar thing does happen with oils..if you

stroke and blend too much you can also get muddy colors,

or a color you didn't intend to make. So working small like

this and limiting your palette seems to help.

you really have to study it to paint all the subleties.

A single bloom to indicate spring. This painting was

done on an orange ground and you can see that color

peeking through around the rim of the cup. I think that

really helped with capturing the vivid orange of the tulip's head.

One of my favorite flowers...the iris. I have many

These are the value studies I did during Carol Marine's

oil painting workshop. I learned a tremendous amount

and will continue with my quest of tackling and understanding

the medium of oils.
